Protect Your Home Or Business During A Freeze

Even in Texas we experience freezing temperatures a few times a year. Any time temperatures drop below 32 degrees there are a few things you should do to prevent damage at you home or commercial property.

Set Faucets to a Drip

Open your cold water faucets to allow them to drip, even just a trickle. Running water through the pipe keeps it from freezing. Open up your cabin doors under sinks adjacent to outside walls. It might be annoying, or you might feel like you are wasting water…but the freeze will pass! What you don’t want, I promise you, is a very expensive restoration job after a pipe burst and sends inches of standing water throughout your home or business.

Wrap Exposed Pipes – Locate Water Shut Off Valve

Be sure to wrap any pipes outside that are exposed or inside that are not in heated areas (such as a garage). If you have a washing machine in an unheated garage, shut off the water to the machine. Disconnect garden hoses and insulate with Styrofoam covers. Covers for pipes and outside faucets can be found at your local hardware store.  Most importantly, locate your water shut off valve and make sure you know how to turn it off. In the event that a pipe does burst, shutting off the water to your property will be the first thing you do to stop the water.

Dangers of Mold Growth

It can ruin your favorite fruit, but it can also be dangerous when left to fester.

Everybody knows that mold is unpleasant and the word makes us cringe. But, do you know exactly what mold is and why it’s bad? Mold is a type of fungus and it can be found everywhere.

Mold is in the air that we breathe and it can be found on daily household surfaces. Most people think that mold is only black, but it can also be purple, green, orange, and white. It can ruin your favorite fruit, but it can also be dangerous when left to fester.

Mold loves wet, warm, and damp environments. It can enter your home through a leaky roof, through leaks behind a shower or appliance, water trapped behind cabinets and baseboards, or any place flooding has occurred.

Allergens

Restoration professionals locate and dry the water, before mold ever has a chance to grow.

If mold is left untreated, it can cause serious medical issues. Mold can cause minor allergic symptoms for people, such as, sneezing, red and itchy eyes, and a stuffy nose. But, more serious conditions, like respiratory issues can also occur. If mold is allowed to grow in a home or place of business, the mold spores that are released into the air can actually implant themselves into one’s lungs.

Elderly people, young children, or those with a weakened immune system are most likely to be affected. Mold can also cause asthma to develop in some people. Not only is mold displeasing, but it can also have major long term health effects.

Water Damage Is Not Always Easy to See – Floods come in all shapes and sizes, and not all of them result in inches of water on the floor where you can see. Leaky appliances can slowly leak water into your walls for months, dishwashers can dump gallons of water behind your cabinets and inside the walls, leaky pipes can lead mold to grow behind sinks and showers. That is why it is so important to get a professional water restoration company out as soon as possible to find and dry water where it has traveled, before it can cause much further damage.
